Mobile World Congress is coming up later this month, so it’s a safe bet that a bunch of new smartphone announcements are on the way. But so are a bunch of leaks that will steal some of the thunder.

Case in point: we have what may be the first look at an upcoming Huawei smartphone with a 3-camera system on the back of the phone, and the new Asus Zenfone 5 with dual rear cameras and an 18:9 display.

The Huawei phone is probably the more unusual of the two, since it appears to be one of the first phones to sport 3 cameras on the back instead of two. It looks like they’ll be vertically stacked and also work with an LED flash and laser autofocus.

It’s unclear what the extra camera is for, but given what we know about dual-camera systems, enhanced telephoto, wide-angle, or adjustable depth features seem like a safe bet. Or maybe you’ll be able to choose between different lenses depending on the situation.

Asus, meanwhile, seems to be intent on releasing a new flagship phone with a 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio display, dual rear cameras, a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, and a micro USB port, at least according to some leaked images.

We’ll have to wait a little longer for official specs, release dates, and pricing.

  1. As usual there will be a hopelessly confusing (hence intentionally misleading) mess of ZF5 models to avoid depending on where you live and whether it might rain or not on any particular day. It seems sure however that some devices will be hobbled with a SD 430 and others will be lucky enough to get a SD 626. Also, indicators are all models will still sport micro-USB (meh), a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack (Yay!), and removable storage (Yay again!) But things may change. In the U.S. ASUS should offer an Android One version on Fi. But that would force them to back off on their invasive ZenUI overlay and perhaps cut down on the bloatware, something ASUS may not be willing to do (unlike Xiaomi).

  2. I hope SOME manufacturers continue to make phones with a conventional aspect ratio. I really cannot stand these tall, skinny phones. Some argue they are easier to use one handed but actually viewing content on them is far from ideal.
