LastPass is a most popular cross-platform, cloud-based password management utilities. Up until now the service has been free to use for desktop or notebook computers, but if you’ve wanted to use LastPass on a smartphone or other mobile device, you’ve needed to pay for a LastPass Premium subscription.
Now LastPass is free for mobile users… but if you want to use the service on both your desktop and mobile devices, you’ll still need to pay.
Here’s how it works: You can now install LastPass for free and use it with a desktop browser. All of your data will be synchronized across as many desktops as you can use: so you can install LastPass on your home PC, work computer, and laptop and use the service without paying a penny.
Likewise, you can install LastPass on an unlimited number of smartphones for free.
But if you want to sync your data between your phone, desktop, and tablet… then you need a subscription. Prices start at $12 per year for a LastPass Premium account.
Of course you could always roll your own solution for free using alternate tools such as 1Password or KeePass and Dropbox or another cloud service. Rival Dashlane also offers a cloud-based solution.
But $12 per year seems like a reasonable fee for a service that not only stores all of your passwords and allows you to access them across devices, but which also generates secure passwords, lets you save secure notes, perform security audits, and more. You know, as long as you can trust that your data is really as secure as possible.
