Kobo is the latest digital book company to offer an eBook reader for under $100. But while Barnes & Noble simply dropped the price of the NOOK Simple Touch to $99, Kobo is taking a page out of Amazon’s book.
Like the Amazon Kindle Touch, the new Kobo Touch will be available for under $100 only if you’re willing to put up with advertisements. The new model is called the Kobo Touch with Offers and it will cost $99.99. It’s expected to go on sale in late November or early December.
You can still get an ad-free Kobo Touch for $139.99. But if you opt for the cheaper version, you’ll see advertisements on the screensaver and at the bottom of the home screen. You won’t ever see an advertisement when you’re reading a book though.
The Kobo Touch features a 6 inch E Ink touchscreen display, 2GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and WiFi. It supports Adobe DRM, which means that in addition to using the device to read books purchased from Kobo, you can access public library books and other titles with the eBook reader — but that’s true of pretty much every big name eReader these days.
