Jolla Mobile is revealing a few more details about the company’s first smartphone, and the first device to ship with the Sailfish operating system. The company introduced the phone earlier this year, and started taking pre-orders. But now Jolla Mobile is providing more details about the phone’s specs.

Jolla smartphone

It’s equipped with a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdagon dual-core processor, a 4.5 inch, 960 x 540 pixel display, an 8MP rear camera, and a 2MP front camera, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card slot.

The phone has a 2100mAh, 7.98 WHr battery. And Jolla Mobile plans to offer “changeable smart covers” for the phone.

While it ships with the Linux-based Sailfish operating system, it’ll also be able to run Android apps. But we already knew that.

The Sailfish operating system is an evolution of the MeeGo, a project to create a smartphone and tablet-friendly Linux operating system that was backed by Intel, Nokia, and others up until a few years ago. Nokia dropped support for MeeGo and adopted the Windows Phone platform (and eventually got bought by Microsoft), and many of the folks that had been invested in the MeeGo project have moved on to Tizen.

There’s still an open source continuation of MeeGo called Mer. But Jolla’s Sailfish OS is the first attempt to bring a smartphone version of a post-MeeGo operating system to market. The OS features a user interface that relies heavily on gestures in place of buttons. But since it’s designed to play well with Android apps (and hardware designed for Android phones), you’ll probably see some on-screen buttons from time to time.

Jolla hopes to ship the first Sailfish smartphones by the end of 2013.

  1. It is a little pricey, 400E. IMHO it’s not a good ideea to enter on a competitive market with a totally new os on an expensive hardware. They should have started from the bottom to gain momentum and increase their user base : affordable smartphones for everyone (this should apply to Canonical also).

    1. it’s considerably hard to build a cheap handset when you are looking at small sales-numbers… there is economies of scales and also they don’t have the chance to capitalize on synergies between a number of models like samsung does… furthermore they have to build their very own os plus hw and get those expenses in with the small batch of smartphones because their is just no use in subsidizing the first phone to get marketshare if you don’t have the liquidity to build a second generation afterwards…
