French tablet maker Archos has a range of Android tablets, portable media players, and eBook readers with screens ranging in size from 2.8 inches to 10.1 inches. But there’s a bit of code tucked away in the latest firmware for Archos devices that suggests the company might be working on a model with a 12 inch display.

Xda-developers forum member letama dug around in the kernel source code and found references to previously unannounced devices including the Archos A70S2, A70H2, and A101XS and A120.

Since Archos tends to give its tablets names that match the screen size (such as the Archos 32 with a 3.2 inch screen or Archos 101 with a 10.1 inch display), it seems likely that the new A70 models will have 7 inch screens while the Archos A120 will have a 12 inch display.

Aside from the name, all we know about the new Archos A120 is that it will have an OMAP4 processor, much like the recently launched Archos 80 and Archos 101 Gen9 tablets.

There’s no word on when the new 12 inch tablet will launch or how much it will cost. In fact, it’s possible it may never see the light of day, but it looks like Archos is at least considering the possibility of a 12 inch device… unless the company just stuck in an A120 reference to mess with us.

  1. Anybody remember the ICD Vega 15 inch monster?

So for somebody like me who has actually been using slates and tablets for about a decade, I can say that the 10 inch device is about the worst possible size.  It’s really too big to be a worthy hand held device, and it’s too small to be truly useful.  In comparison, something in the 7 inch range gives up little in on-screen utility and gains a lot in terms of in-hand usability, and something in the 12 inch range doesn’t really lose that much in terms of the in-hand experience but gains a substantial amount in usefulness.  In fact, anybody who used one of the old Toshiba Tecra M7s or the more recent Gateway effort knows that a 14 inch slate (if you can keep the weight under control), is an amazing palette of possibilities.  Go play with a Cintiq if you haven’t yet experience a grownup sized tablet.

  2. 12″ means you can display scanned A4 documents in original size (after cropping a little whitespace along the edges). That’s very useful for EU business and academic users.

  3. Archos announced they were working on 6 sizes from 5″ to 12″ months ago. But the issue is that Archos does not have unlimited amounts of cash to launch unlimited production of all kinds of sizes, so they can only afford to release 2 sizes for now. The idea also is for the stores not to always be out of stock like they were last year when Archos had to split their production budget among 5 different sizes, more G9 sizes may come later. 12″ would be fun, 5″ G9 and 7″ G9 I think would be better.
