OK, so the iPad is out and it’s getting pretty positive review all around. But while the screen is great, the on-screen keyboard is decent, and the overall app ecosystem is growing fast, the thing still can’t run two programs at once (unless one of those apps is part of the operating system like the browser or music player). And that makes the iPad a bit less useful than a tablet running Google Android or Windows 7.

But that could all change soon. Maybe.

Apple is set to roll out iPhone OS 4.0 later this year. And the company just announced plans to hold an event on April 8th to give us a sneak peek of the upcoming OS. Will it support multitasking? I certainly hope so. If not, I suspect we’ll see a lot of non-Apple tablets sold this year, and not just by people who love USB ports and removable batteries.
