Intel is continuing to expand its line of low power Atom chips today with the introduction of the new “Tunnel creek” platform. The Intel Atom E600 system on a chip processor line is aimed at embedded systems such as in-vehicle infotainment systems or media phones.
One of the first Tunnel Creek chips will be a new processor codenamed Stellarton, which will include an Atom E600 CPU and an Altera field programmable gate array. Intel also unveiled a new chip called the Atom CE4200 for internet connected TV sets and set top boxes. It sounds like this is an updated version of the CE4100 chip used in the upcoming Boxee Box. The chip supports 3D graphics acceleration and H.264 HD video encoding.
The new platform will be able to handle Windows Embedded Standar 7 and Windows Media Center. It sounds like the new Acer and Asus set top boxes spotted yesterday may use the new CE4200 chip.
