Intel’s “Skull Canyon” NUC is the most powerful mini-desktop computer from the company to date. It features a Core i7-6770HQ quad-core processor, Intel Iris Pro 580 graphics, and a bunch of other premium features… which may help explain the premium price tag.
When Intel introduced the Skull Canyon NUC, the company said it would be available in May for $650 and up. And sure enough, with about a month to go, retailers are starting to take pre-orders for$650 and up.
Newegg is taking orders for exactly $650, while Amazon is currently charging $700.
The computer is sold as a barebones kit, which means you’ll need to supply your own memory, storage, and operating system. But it does have a processor and wireless card with support for 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and Intel WiDi 6.0 wireless display technology.
The Skull Canyon NUCÂ is about 8.5″ x 4.6″ x 0.9″ and under the hood it has two M.2 slots for solid state storage and room for up to 32GB of DDR4-2133 MHz memory.
Other features include HDMI 2.0 and a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port which can be used to connect a second monitor thanks to DisplayPort over USB-C. You can also connect an external graphics dock, like the Razer Core, using the Thunderbolt port.
There are also four USB 3.0 ports, an infrared sensor, and an SDXC card reader.
