The InkCase Plus is an E Ink display that fits into the cover a smartphone case. Pair it with your phone and you can use the low-power, black and white screen to read eBooks or view pictures from your phone without turning on the phone’s color display.

I was sent a demo unit to test with my Nexus 5 smartphone, and while I really liked being able to look at cute pictures of my cats without turning on the display, there wasn’t much else that I could actually do with the device.

It only supports a handful of apps at this point. If that changes in the future, the InkCase Plus could become a much more useful device. But for now it only supports two eBook apps, a photo app, and a fitness tracker app.

That could make it tough to justify spending close to $100 for the device. But what we’re offering a chance to get one for free.

Note: This contest is for an InkCase Plus and a custom fit case for a Google Nexus 5 smartphone. You can use the InkCase Plus display with any Android phone that supports Bluetooth. But if you want to use the phone with a device other than the Nexus 5, you’ll either need to use it without a case or buy a case separately.

  1. Sounds interesting. I hope they create more compatible apps.

  2. This is an awesome idea… Not just for battery saving, but reading from an eink screen is much much more practical and less strain for your eyes. It’s amazing

  3. It’d be cool to see how it works on the nexus 5, this is defiantly a cool idea. I’d love to try one

  4. I want this……it looks pretty cool please try to give it to me
    Thanks
    Big fan

  5. This E ink panel is quite primitive now, but a great piece of technology! Can clearly help in saving battery at precious moments!

  6. I hoped that they ever created a cover like this. As I see, they did. And I liked it

    @regainingark

  7. I was thinking the exact same thing as Robin Chatterjee! I already own a Moto 360, so Bluetooth is always on. My Nexus 5 hasn’t got the greatest battery life, so E-Ink would definitely help! I want this!! 😀

  8. I was thinking the exact same thing as Robin Chatterjee! I already own a Moto 360, so Bluetooth is always on. My Nexus 5 hasn’t got the greatest battery life, so E-Ink would definitely help! I want this! 😀

  9. This is good if you already have a smart watch as you are already paying the Bluetooth tax. E ink should have great battery life too which is always a concern with me on the nexus 5 especially after lollipop.

  10. Could it be configured to display notifications, emails, texts/SMS etc? Would like to get it to find out….

  11. Awesome… love it and …sure ..i will win..i wanna use this ink display

  12. I don’t find any advantage over it. Still I love the innovation.

  13. It would be awesome if it could be used with offline maplse, giving days or battery for navigation!

  14. I’d love to win that! Love reading on the go and can’t wait to try it!

  15. I’d like to be the one getting the eink display case up for grabs cheers and thanks!

  16. seems very good but what about battery drain when bluetooth is on and will it also show the calls i receive and messages. if it does then its very good as sunlight glare is less in an eink display.

  17. If it’s connected via Bluetooth then wouldn’t it be more useful as a secondary bigger screen than just a case?

  18. Finally I could read a book without fear of draining my already poor battery life

  19. Woah…. Daz really cool I wud love to have one…. I hope I get it… Plzzzzz

  20. This seems like a great idea for saving battery and being able to basically turn a phone into a kindle.

  21. I read books using my Nexus, so something like this would be pretty nice!

  22. It would be much more useful if it supports notifications. That would save a lot of battery! Also it could act like an ‘always on’ clock.

  23. Wow,this is awesome. I think it will usefull when we need look the apps without wake up the phone. Will saving more battery. All activity like browsing and reading will not drain the battery so much!

  24. Reminds me of the yota phone. Not sure if it’s useful, but I would love to read some Manga and Graphic novels on it.

  25. Nice giveaway, I haven’t heard of this product before today. Enter my please 🙂

  26. I think this is a great idea. The los power and screen type of eInk is great to read. Doesn’t hit and make the eyes tired like a LCD Or led screen. Hope i win because i was already searching for something like this.

  27. Hmm interesting. I read a lot of books on my phone, so this could be a cool addition to my arsenal.

  28. I’d love to see what this all about.. Love my 2nd gen kindle.

  29. Lol.. What’s the point. Can’t you buy a e book reader with an E ink display for like 50 bucks haha

  30. What a great device. Just the thing to streamline my devices ( could leave my kindle at home)

  31. Even though it has little compatibility for now, I still think this is a great device with a promising future. With that being said, I’d love to win one.

  32. I have a Nexus 5 32GB and this will be a perfect companion to read ebook form time to time.

  33. Great thing for my battery life, it would be happy to have this, and me too

  34. It’s an original and interesting idea. Price is too high, unfortunately.

  35. How about a different cat pic for different times in the day? Chasing mice, sleeping in the sink, and so on. KILLER APP.

  36. To be clear, one nice gadget to fast see things and reading. Very Nice for reading at school when you forgot tour book. Yes i want this, because its just a nice gadget

  37. I’m glad they finally have one for the Nexus I love to read books on my phone (when I forget my actual books somewhere) or just reading the free books off the play store its all good for me

  38. The big concern for me is whether you waste more juice having bluetooth on then you save by reading an e-ink screen. Still, I’d love toh ave one to find out.

  39. Hello Liliputing! Long time reader, not much of a commenter – but finally a case (! 🙂 to leave a comment! I would be very happy to be selected! 🙂 Thanks!

  40. I really want this, but have been unable to justify the price tag. Really nice with another international competition!

  41. I will give it a try 🙂 I always wanted a Yotaphone… I guess this is the next best thing

  42. Oh yeah, I want this screen, to wear on my writ brace, like a trophy or a supesized apple watch.

  43. I need something to spice up my N5, I’m definitely not upgrading until the next non Phablet.

  44. Very nice. Been wanting one of these to try out integration with an app I’m developing, but my budget at the moment’s closer to $0 than $100.

  45. I’ve been waiting for more e-ink smartphone devices, but since this is not happening as fast as I would like, I think this is a worthy alternative… and I certainly want one!

  46. I love eink, how else to you explain a very early model iriver ebook reader? Please send it down under.

  47. Nice gift for my son in college. I haven’t been able to give him much “stuff” lately.

  48. Wow, that fitness tracker would be nice when going on a long ride with my bike. If they make an e-ink app for navigation as well, that would be super-awesome.
