Android Market fix for the HP TouchPad

Now that the CyanogenMod team has released the first public build of Google Android for the HP TouchPad tablet you might think the developers would be sitting back and relaxing. They’re not. They’re continuing to squash bugs and improve features.

While the version of Android which was released yesterday allows you to install the Google Android Market on the tablet, some apps are hidden from view. If you search the Market for Google Maps, Dolphin Browser HD, Facebook, or Twitter apps, for instance, you won’t find them.

Now there’s a fix for that. All you have to do is download and flash a tiny update to the tablet which prevents the Android Market from filtering out apps it doesn’t think will run on the HP TouchPad’s 1024 x 768 pixel display.

Some apps will work better than others. In my experience, all of the apps mentioned above work perfectly — although the Facebook and Twitter apps look a little silly when you blow them up to the tablet’s large display.

You can find the update file at Multiupload. There are at least two ways to install it. You can use ClockworkMod Recovery to flash the update or you can use the ACMEInstaller tool.

  1. The Market icon is missing after cancel the initial Android sign on with Google account.  Would it appears after I sign on to Gmail later? 

  3. I installed 2.1A and I dont have Market App itself. Can somebody tell me where to get it?

  4. i kept running into an issue with connecting to wi-fi. Thank the universe for my Linux guru brother-in-law correcting my Linux-rookie mistake of having the system automatically search for the network causing it to get suspended in scanning mode unable to ever detect a my network. Solution, set your wi-fi by manually entering your ssid. Works like a charm…

  6. ive installed the new update using the clockworkmod method but now i cannot access market, keeps saying no connection but browser and other internet related apps work fine. help pls!

  7. Is it usually pretty easy to update cyanogen mod? Like when they go from Alpha 1 to Alpha 2 or beta, etc. I’ve usually just waited until a solid release is out but most reviews/videos out seem to think it is pretty functional and worth a try.

  10. Doesn’t seem to work.  Did you u have to reinstall everything to do this update?  I tried to do the second part with the ACME installer but I might just install android again and add the fix that way.

    1. You shouldn’t have to. I used the CWMD method. It looks more complicated than it is… and it worked perfectly for me. 

      1. Yeah I wanted to do that method but I have yet to ever get ClockworkMod working.  I always get a boot failed for it.

  11. What apps have you tried that work well at the TouchPad’s resolution? What looks horrible?  How is Dolphin at 1024×768?

    1. Most web browsers look reasonably good including Firefox and Dolphin HD.

      The Gmail app is functional, but a two-panel version would be nice.

      Some games (including word game Wixel) never look good on high resolution screens, since the game board hangs out in a tiny window.

      Other games, such as Robo Defense look great.

      The Amazon Kindle app works reasonably well, but I’d like to see a version with a two-pane view.

      Pandora works, but the graphics look silly when blown up to the large display. 

      The Twitter and Facebook apps also work, but also look a little silly when you’ve got a one-panel view on the big display. 

      1. Aldiko looks great.  It even switches into two-column mode if the font
        is small enough.  (I guess it has always done that, but I had never made
        the font small enough on my phone so wasn’t aware.)

        Shortyz, the awesome crossword program, works well on the tablet.  The
        currently-highlighted clue is a little hard to read, but I can deal with
        it.

        ezPDF works well.  It wasn’t free, but is my favorite reader for some
        things (okay, D&D / Pathfinder books.  I’m that sort of geek).

        youtube app works, but has problems with resolution.  landacape/full
        screen crops a bit from the top and bottom of videos for some reason,
        and portrait mode doesn’t show a video at all.

        I’ve only had it installed for a couple hours, still trying things, but overall I’m a giggling fool right now.  Why are my coworkers looking at me so strangely?
