The HP Mini 1000 6 cell battery may be kind of ugly, but it doubles the netbook’s battery life. And as Sascha from Netbook News.de pointed out to me once, it’s on the bottom of the laptop where you’ll never have to look at it. There’s just one problem: Up until recently the 6 cell battery wasn’t available for purchase.

You still can’t order an HP Mini 1000 preconfigured with the high capacity battery. But if you search the HP parts store for part number 517581-001, you can find the battery for $153.90. That’s right, for the price of 3 batteries you could buy a netbook and have some change left over. A lot of change. But that seems to be par for the course when it comes to spare laptop batteries. Hopefully HP will eventually offer customers the choice between a 3 cell and a 6 cell battery when they purchase the laptop.

  1. How do you know that is the correct part number for the 6-cell battery that’s compatible with the HP mini 1000? Thanks!

  2. Looks like a spare 3-cell with a mini charger would be a better option. Spare 3 cell can fit in your pocket .

  3. Hey, that battery is more than “kind of ugly;” it’s downright ghastly! It completely throws off the Mini’s sleek design, and by the look of it, probably makes the mini “tippy” when you place it on a surface. One of the big advantages to a netbook — and this one in particular — is the slimness of it. Easily slips into a shoulderbag, netbook sleeve, etc. But not any more! With that 6 cell battery it’s like strapping a can of Pepsi to your netbook! That thing bulks up your baby, and will make it snag on things as you’re pulling it out of your backpack etc. Forget that!

  4. This is why I went with the 6 cell Aspire One instead, it’s available and now appears MUCH cheaper than I had originally though. Holy smokes, $153!

  5. I hope there is.. I mean, I consider the 8-cell for x61s overpriced (@ $160), but charging that much for a 6-cell netbook battery is plain ridiculous.

  6. There is a special place in Hell for companies that charge these kind of prices for batteries. They wonder why people take a chance on Chinese batteries?
