Want an 11.6 inch mini-laptop with high performance graphics, and the ability to run OS X? It looks like the HP Mini 311 fits the bill.

HP sells this laptop for $399 and up with Windows. But the brave, the daring, the EULA-disregarding OS X hackers of the world have discovered that you can coax the Mac operating system to run on the HP Mini 311, leaving you with a thin and light OS X-powered laptop with an Intel Atom processor, an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and NVDIA GeForce 9400M graphics.

The HP Mini 311 has only been available for a few weeks, and the OS X hacking is still a work in progress. The high resolution display and graphics are supported and Bluetooth, the card reader, Ethernet, and webcam all work. But sound, WiFi, and sleep/resume functions are another story.

  3. That’s way more ambitious than what I tried. I loaded up Ubuntu Jaunty on my 311 instead and just used a Mac4lin theme and Cairo-dock to get gnome to look like OS X.

    1. One of the tricks to getting sleep/resume to work reliably in linux is finding a way to reliably bring the bluetooth/wifi combo card down. In Ubuntu I have use the hardware switch to shut off wireless on the Mini 311 if I want to suspend or hibernate. It’s a slight pain, but not too much of a hassle.

  4. I have seen other computers that people have loaded the Apple os onto. Apple should allow it since there are those will do it anyway. It is not like they are not buying the os and installing (most of them anway) and Apple does make money off selling the os by itself. Either allow it or don’t do anything to those who do except deny support; install at own risk type of thing.

  6. I just got off the phone with them a little over an hour ago. SuSE is definitely an option and will save you $50 if you don’t want the Windows-Tax. Also the HD option will be delayed at least a month (a big game changer for me since that and the Atom proc are the big draw in my book).

    I’ve handled the 2133 and it’s the most solid netbook I’ve seen thus far. MacBook Pro solid. It’s styling is very reminiscent of the last gen MBPs and the new one’s cover-down/monitors.

    I really wanted to get my hands on one of these asap for both an Edubuntu eval and to try my hand at Hackintoshing one. It’s got the guts… and could really make for a solid alternative to the MBAir (even if it’s a bit of a EULA stretch).

    Can’t wait.

  7. Heavens. This one is just bait for me isn’t it? With the real Macs running Nvidia hardware, this would definitely work with the standard duct-tape and glue fixes. Sigh.

    I think sleep/resume/hibernate is still quite a bitch for HP hardware.

  8. Wifi can almost always be made to work by swapping the internal card for an Apple/Broadcom card. I’m sure sleep/resume will also come in short order. Sound may be a different story, as I don’t know of anyone working on sound for hackintoshes, outside of VoodooHDA (which I assume has been tried already).

      I got my HP Mini 311 from Verizon and the broadband card works great. I really need help with the WiFi range. I thought the Broadcom a/b/g/draft-n would give me good range but it mostl refuses to connect and troubleshooter says to unplug the rouer. Not an option mostly. A strong library sig will work but at the office, works right under the router but around the corner nada. Any help?
