Just in case you were wondering how easy it is to pop out the 1GB of RAM that comes with the Dell Inspiron Mini 10v and replace it with a 2GB stick, here’s your answer: Not easy. Not easy at all.
In fact, the process looks pretty much excruciating, and definitely isn’t the sort of thing that beginning computer hackers are going to want to try to attempt. MyDellMini Forum member anguish has posted a 3 part video showing all the steps it takes to replace the RAM. Why three videos? Because YouTube cuts off his videos at around 10 minutes, and it’s not until about 13 minutes in… with some video edits in place that you can even see the RAM.

mini-10v-ram-upgradeIn a nutshell, you need to remove the netbook’s keyboard and palm rest, then pry up the motherboard in order to get at the RAM. And then of course, you’ve got to reassemble the computer and hope that you haven’t misplaced any of the screws.

The funny thing is that Dell includes a single access panel on the bottom of the Inspiron Mini 10v. It’s for the WLAN adapter. Because you’re clearly going to need to access that more often than the RAM, right?

  2. this upgrade sucks. ram should be under the kb which shojuld pop up if not able to add a bottom panel Dell is wacko. nothing like the Mini 9 with that random proprietary mess of a SSD HDD, IDE/PATA PCiE wtf. I disagree this is def a Good upgrade for newbie ‘hax0rs’ tho very beginner skill level. just make sure you have a 2gb stick, cuz only 1 slot…

  4. You should have mentioned that there is only RAM Slot. Coz after I did the entire thing I ended up finding that I had a 1GB Ram card and a 1GB already installed. I just changed them so I felt good after doing the effort!!! I feel stupidly numb after your thorough explanation and very sleepy… Almost.

  6. Well, it was 27 minutes (roughly) because I monologued a bit, but I went slow, and also that was both teardown and rebuild. I could have done it in maybe 15 minutes. Getting quite good at it now.

    As far as why? To be able to first of all, and second, it is a cheap performance boost.

    Not hard at all, just time consuming. Hardest part is getting the damn palmrest up.

    1. when i took mine apart to look around inside, the palm rest on mine was pretty easy to snap up without breaking any clips. it is firmly in place too.

      i just used an old credit card and maybe a knife to start it without damaging it like a screw driver would.

      i’m looking forward to upgrading my ram soon. I dual boot windows 7 and also mac leopard, and it would be nice to have a little speed boost on both os’s

  7. Excruciating would be the word for it.

    Why would I want to do this? Why would I just not do this to my worst enemy’s computer! I AM ADDING MORE RAM TO THIS NETBOOK TO…. crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentation of their women!!!

    1. more ram is a cheap speed upgrade for many operating systems.

      And this isn’t hard (just time consuming) if you’re not a friggin’ ‘tardd…

  8. now, i can’t see video from here… but how on earth can it take that long to pop the mobo out of a laptop? was this done extra slow for the sake of the camera?
