A week after Google slashed the starting price of its Nexus 4 smartphone, the company has sold out of the $199 models with 8GB of storage. According to The Verge, it’s unlikely that Google will get any more of those units in stock, so your best chance of picking up a Nexus 4 at this point is to spend $249 on a 16GB model or turn to eBay.

The move isn’t a huge surprise — a $100 price cut is usually a good sign that a company is trying to clear out remaining inventory either to make way for a new product or to cut its losses.

As the Nexus 4 approaches its first birthday, it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Google were to announce a new model soon.

At the same time, this could be an acknowledgement that 8GB isn’t really enough storage space for a smartphone in 2013 — particularly for one that doesn’t have a microSD card slot or other expandable storage option. There are only so many apps and games that you can fit in 8GB, and that’s before you even try to load up your phone with music, movies, or photos.

  1. Lack of 4G was a biggie, but I think even worse was the lack of an SD card slot. 8GB is an OK amount of storage space, if it can be expanded with an SD card. In fact, until 128GB of storage becomes the norm, I’d want an SD card slot in any smartphone/tablet I buy.

    1. I don’t think lack of 4G was such a big issue. HSPA+ specs are more than you’d ever get (in the US at least) in real usage anyway. Besides, the entire nexus line was supposed to be for developers, they just happened to get sort of popular with the general public.

I will agree that 8GB is too little without a memory card slot, and on a more expensive device it would be unforgivable. But at under $200, I can even forgive that. Too bad they’re all sold out now, they will be missed at that price.
