Google’s latest messaging app is a tool designed to make it easy to share pictures, videos, articles, and other items with small groups.

Google Spaces basically a group messaging app for phones, desktops, or web that has built-in YouTube, Google Search, and Chrome components, letting you look up and share internet content without leaving the app.

Google calls the app “Spaces” because it lets you create a virtual space for each conversation. Set up a space, invite contacts through another messaging app, email, or a social network and other users can join the conversation and start sharing.

The search feature helps you find older content that was shared a while ago, which also makes Spaces a bit like an Evernote-style app for keeping track of notes… but in this case, with an emphasis on notes that you’ve shared with other people.

On the surface it doesn’t seem like Spaces does a lot that you couldn’t already do with other messaging platforms: most let you insert links, videos, and pictures. But Spaces allows you to do it without copying and pasting content from one app to another, and since it has a browser built-in, you can view actual web pages within Spaces instead of just a preview or link that you’d have to click to open a site in a different app.

Google says Spaces is starting to roll out for Android, iOS, desktop, and mobile web users with Gmail accounts. The company will also be demonstrating the app at the Google I/O developer conference later this week.
