Google is starting to roll out a minor update to its Android operating system, and it looks like the first device to receive Android 5.1.1 is the Nexus Player.

A factory image of Android 5.1.1 (LMY47V) for the Android TV box is now available for download from Google.

Source code for Android 5.1.1 is also being uploaded to the Android Open Source Project.

It’s not unusual for Nexus devices to be among the first to receive Android updates. But it is a little surprising to see the first factory image released for the Nexus Player before it’s available for any Nexus smartphones or tablets.

In fact, Google hasn’t even released Android 5.1 for the Nexus 9 yet. That tablet is still running Google Android 5.0. But there’s some evidence that the Android 5.1.1 update is coming soon to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9, which suggests that Google may be skipping Android 5.1 altogether for its latest tablet.

It’s not yet clear what the new version of Android will bring to any of those devices, but the fact that Google is calling the new build Android 5.1.1 suggests it won’t have many features that aren’t already available in Android 5.1. Most likely the new software will fix bugs and improve stability.

  1. Since 5.1 on my nexus 5 I’ve lost data after a phone call, requiring a restart to get it back. Hopefully 5.1.1 addresses that issue

    1. I just installed 5.1 on my wife’s original (2012??) Nexus 7 last weekend. I don’t use it much, so I don’t know how long that was hanging around waiting to be installed. It doesn’t seem that long ago though that it got 5.0.

  2. Technically the Nexus 9 is running 5.0.1, not 5.0.

I’m not sure what the difference is, but I’m sure they fixed at least a few bugs.
