You know you should use complex, hard-to-guess passwords for apps and websites that require a login. And you know you should use different passwords for each service. But typing tH!sLIttl3p!ggyW3nt0M@rk3t on your smartphone keyboard is a pain in the behind… not to mention remembering dozens of equally complicated passwords.

Password managers like 1Pass, Dashlane, and LastPass take a bit of the pain away by letting you store all of your passwords in one place, while keeping them safe, encrypted, and protected by a single password (or thumb print, or what have you). But some of those apps are easier than others to use on a phone.

Now Dashlane has announced it’s working with Google on a new open source API for Android devices  that will make it easy to login to mobile apps using a password manager installed on your phone.

open yolo

The API is called Open YOLO, for “You Only Log in Once,” and while Dashlane is one of the driving forces behind the project, since it’s open source software it should be available to developers of alternative password managers.

The API is still under development, but Dashlane says it’s collaborating with “other top password management companies” who will contribute to the project… although no names have been mentioned yet.

Dashlane says the project could eventually move beyond Android to become a cross-platform standard.
