Chinese ecommerce service Alibaba has invested $590 million in phone maker Meizu, which means that more future Meizu phones could run Alibaba’s custom version of Android.

The company launched Aliyun OS, also known as Yun OS a few years ago and launched a partnership with Meizu in 2014. A major investment in the rising star in the Chinese smartphone space could help get Yun OS onto more phones… which also gets Alibaba’s app store and shopping apps into customers’ hands.

According to a press release, the investment will bring collaboration between the two companies, including “a deeper integration of Meizu’s hardware and Alibaba group’s mobile operating system.”

Most Meizu phones currently ship with Android software, but the company also plans to launch one of the first Ubuntu-powered smartphones this year.

While Yun OS is based on Android, it’s in direct competition with Google’s mobile operating system, which has prompted Google to discourage device makers from using the software (or other “incompatible” forks of Android such as Amazon’s Fire OS.
