fujitsu lifebook t580

At first glance, the Fujitsu LifeBook T580 looks like a typical netbook. It has a 10 inch display and a thin and light case. At second glance, it looks like a convertible tablet-style netbook, or netvertible, since you can twist the display, fold it down over the keyboard and use the machine in tablet mode. But there are at least two things that really make the LifeBook T580 stand out from any netbook on the market: price and performance.

By definition, netbooks are cheap. The T580 isn’t. I’m not a stickler for saying that netbooks also offer lower performance than more expensive notebooks. If someone were willing to shove a Core i7 chip in a 10 inch netbook and sell it for $400 I wouldn’t complain. But the folks at Netbook News.de report that the Fujitsu LifeBook T580 will sell for up to 1599 Euros, or about $2200 US. So as much as it looks like one, it’s not a netbook. Still, it looks like one heck of a notebook.

First introduced in September, it looks like the Fujitsu LifeBook T580 is set to start shipping in Germany by the end of November. At least one retailer has a product listing for the laptop.

While there will be several configuration options available, the product listing describes a machine with a 10.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel multitouch capacitive display and an active digitizer for pen input. It has an Intel Core i5-560UM processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB, 7200RPM hard drive, and runs Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.

The laptop supports WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G wireless connections, and has a 6 cell, 5800mAh battery.

There’s no word on if or when the T580 will be available in the US.

  1. Seems pretty nice. But why o why does it not have an option to choose Linux instead of windows?

And where are the OLED screens?

  2. I wouldn’t mind upgrading my P1620 to this. The 2GB max RAM on the P1620 is just too restrictive.

  3. The T580 looks like a really awesome system. It has great features in a small package.

The T580 won’t come out for another month for the USA. It should be out sometime during December.

    I got my contacts 😉

  4. Netbooks are cheap because they use components that are cheap. The Atom is LOW power, LOW efficiency, and LOW price. The size is irrelevant. Everything about this device is high-end.

The LifeBook p1630 was one of my favorite devices, more portable and powerful than any netbook, and it achieved comparable battery life. It is also MUCH better built with a much higher quality keyboard. Plus, the hard press passive digitizer with Fujitsu’s excellent palm rejection technology made it a great all around portable note taking machine. This device seems to be the next in this line of devices. What these devices have ALWAYS needed was an active digitizer. Unfortunately, it looks like Fujitsu have gone with one of the worst active digitizer options. That’s a shame. Whereas the difference between passive digitizers (resistive versus capacitive) is largely a matter of preference or operating system design, active digitizer are differentiated by how many features they included or excluded. This misses out on most of the good stuff.
