It’s hard to make a notebook stand out these days. The basic formula of a display, keyboard, touchpad, a few ports, and guts that make the thing go has gotten pretty standard. But every now and again someone comes along and shakes things up with an awesome new built-in accessory that you probably don’t need.
Fujitsu is showing off two new innovations in its latest notebooks. The Fujitsu LifeBook P711/C, for instance, is a 12.1 inch notebook with a built-in pico projector. The projector hides inside the case when you’re not using it, in the space where you might otherwise find a disc drive. You can pull out the projector and point it at a wall or other surface for presentations, watching movies, or what have you.
The laptop has a 1366 x 768 pixel display, but the projector tops out at 800 x 600 pixels. The Fujitsu LifeBook S761/C will also have a built-in projector. That model has a 13.3 inch display.
I don’t expect these notebooks to come cheap, and I suspect they’ll appeal primarily to business customers.
Next up we have the Fujitsu Lifebook E741/C with an integrated palm vein sensor. It works much like a fingerprint scanner, but instead of pressing your finger against the computer to unlock it, you just wave your palm over the top since no physical contact is required. The sensor reads the unique patterns of your veins and lets you in.
This model is a bit less portable, with a 15.6 inch display.
