If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past 2 years, it’s that I don’t often need an optical disc drive on a netbook. I mean sure, a USB disc drive comes in handy if I’m trying to install a new operating system or perform a system restore. But that’s really about it. And I’m guessing I do that sort of thing far more frequently than your typical netbook user. But some people still might want to watch DVDs, listen to CDs, or play games that come on discs on a netbook. Who knows, they might even want to burn data to a disc. And for those people, there’s a new option: The Frontier UX netbook from Japan.

This little laptop features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 10.1 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/ WiFi, and Windows 7 Home Premium. It has a 6 cell, 6.4 hour battery. And oh yeah, it comes standard with a DVD drive. If you want, you can use that space for an optional second hard drive instead.

The computer also has a card reader, mic and heaphone jacks and Ethernet. It measures 10.4″ x 7.6″  x 1.5″ and weighs about 2.9 pounds.

The Frontier UX sells for about 59800 yen in Japan, or about $644 US.
