French tablet maker EviGroup has a habit of making tablets with unusual features. For instance, last year the company demonstrated a tablet with head-tracking capabilities. Now EviGroup is offering a tablet with an optional Pixel Qi sunlight viewable disable.

The EviGroup PadPro is a tablet with a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 160GB hard drive, and Windows 7 operating system. It supports pressure-sensitive input with a stylus, and features 802.11a/b/g WiFi and Ethernet.

The Pixel Qi display is a special LCD that’s designed to work with or without a backlight. When the backlight is on, the screen functions much like any other full-color LCD. But when you turn off the backlight, the screen uses 80 percent less power and switches to a nearly grayscale mode that’s visible using ambient light.

If you use the tablet outdoors in direct sunlight, you’ll be able to see the screen clearly. Or if you just don’t need full color and want to use the tablet to read a book in a brightly lit room, you can do that too.

The Pixel Qi screen is optional, but without it EviGroup estimates the tablet will only get around 2.5 hours of battery life with the screen on, and 3 hours with the backlight off. Opting for the Pixel Qi display could double battery life to as much as 5 hours.

EviGroup will charge €599 for the tablet in France.

  1. I understand that these screens cost more than typical LCDs,
but I really do not understand why more tablets and phones don not have
    them.  We are marketing “use
anywhere” devices that really only work well inside…in a dim room.  It is CRAZY!!!
