Rockchip’s RK3188 processor is starting to look like the chip of choice for Chinese Android tablet makers. And that’s a good thing. It’s a fast quad-core processor that offers performance on par with some of the best chips we saw from companies such as NVIDIA and Samsung last year.
While tablets with RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 chip might not be as powerful as newer devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 or Samsung Exynos Octa processors, they’re also generally a lot cheaper, as Cube’s upcoming $200 tablet demonstrates.
Now Chinese tablet maker Freelander is getting in on the action with two new quad-core tablets.
AndroidPC.es reports Freelander is working on models with 9.7 inch and 10.1 inch displays, both sporting RK3188 chips, ARM Mali 4 graphics, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software.
Freelander PD80HD
The 9.7 inch model features a 2048 x 1536 pixel display, matching the resolution of Apple’s iPad.
It also has 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, Bluetooth, and support for Miracast wireless display technology.
Freelander PD900
The company’s 10.1 inch tablet also has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. But it has a less impressive screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.
Up until recently that was the default resolution for 10 inch Android tablets, so it’s kind of funny to knock a tablet for shipping with a 1280 x 800 pixel display. But the good news is that like other Chinese tablets, the Freelander PD900 and PD80HD will likely sell for much lower prices than devices from companies with better name recognition in the West.
The Freelander PD900 is available from AliExpress for $216 and up.
