FreedomPop is taking its free cellular internet service international. The company already sells mobile hotspots and smartphones in the US that offer a small amount of mobile data for free. Now the company is launching limited service in 25 additional countries.
The FreedomPop Global hotspot works in 25 countries across Europe, Asia, and South America, while the new FreedomPop global SIM lets you use your phone in Europe.
Of course, you don’t get all that much for free. Both hotspot and SIM card users only get 200 MB of free data each month. If you need more than that, you can buy additional data for $10 per 500 MB.
FreedomPop sells the Global hotspot for $50 and says the SIM card option should be available soon for $10.
I’ve been an occasional FreedomPop user for a few years, and the company really does deliver on its promise of providing free data once you’ve paid for the hardware… but you might need to be vigilant to make sure you aren’t charged fees for services you didn’t know you were signing up for.
Still, the new offering could be an interesting option for folks that want to check their email and perform other light internet activities while traveling.
