Dell Streak with Android 3.2 Honeycomb

When the Dell Streak 7 launched earlier this year it was the first 7 inch tablet to feature a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor. But the tablet had two strikes against it: It shipped with a low resolution, 800 x 480 pixel display and with Google Android 2.2 Froyo at a time when most tablets had higher resolution screens and Android 3.x Honeycomb software.

Now Dell is getting ready to remedy at least one of those problems with a software update that brings Android 3.2 Honeycomb to the 7 inch tablet. Sascha from Netbook News got an early look at the updated tablet software at the IFA trade show in Berlin today.

Dell has gone with a standard Honeycomb user interface with a combination of widgets and app icons on the home screen an software buttons in a bar on the bottom of the device for Home, Back, and Recent Apps functions. This replaces the Dell Stage software overlay that had been running on top of earlier tablets from Dell including the Dell Streak and Dell Streak 7 running Android 2.2.

This isn’t really the first time we’ve seen Honeycomb on Dell’s 7 inch tablet. Earlier this summer Android hacker DJ Steve created custom software for the tablet using Android 3.2 But it is the first look at the official software update from Dell.

  1. I have this Dell Streak 7 with Honeycomb 3.2 and have a problem with a “dead zone” of about an inch along the bottom of the screen (along the side where you plug in the USB cable) which won’t accept input.  I’ve read about this in other places but have found no solution yet.  Any ideas?

  2. hi i was thinking on buying a samsung galxy s 5.0 media player but then i saw this fr almost the same price…i just wanted to know whether all games that work in honeycomb work in this. and whether the touch is good..and also can we call through this

  3. what is the release date for  Dell Streak 7 with android 3.2 honeycomb?

  4. Honeycomb works prefectly ( using dj _Steve’s flavor currently ). Apps work perfectly as well. Being that applications on android are designed for phones primarily , 800×480 is a resolution applications were develpped to run on. I use rdp daily on it and if the resolution were any higher on a 7 inch screen, navigating through windows would be Impossible due to application buttons/menus being too small to select with your fingertip. The screen is sharp and responsive. Don’t judge it based on your own opinion rather than go hands on And experience it first hand. Its an amazing little tablet with the same horsepower of the larger tablets, but can fit in my back pocket ( and I’m not a big guy either ). My only gripe is the battery life. I only get 4.5-5 hrs with heavy usage. This is because dell couldn’t squeeze in a 2nd battery pack because of the 7 inch form factor ( unlike the larger tablets with 2x batteries Integrated ). Luckily I am always near power outlets 🙂

  5. Is Honeycomb a good idea on a 800×480 screen?  I’ve heard the 7″ Acer A100 was having problems with resolution being too low for Honeycomb apps and the A100 has a 1024×600 screen.

    1. sure. Just don’t take pics of your’ll never be able to see it at that resolution.
