We’re starting to see PC makers include video accelerators in netbooks, including the NVIDIA ION graphics chipset and Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator. But what if you already have a netbook and don’t want to go out and buy a new one just to watch a few 1080p HD videos?

Quanta subsidiary FaceVision is launching a card that you can plug into a notebook or netbook that will add the ability to play 1080 videos in the H.264 format. The only down side is that the card comes in the form of an ExpressCard, which means it’s only going to work with the handful of netbooks that have ExpressCard slots including the HP Mini 2140, Gigabyte Touch Note, or Lenovo IdeaPad S10.

As Sascha from Netbook News discovered, you can also use the video card to make high definition video calls, although you’ll probably need a higher resolution webcam than you get with most of those netbooks to do that.

You can check out a video of the system in action after the break.

  1. Is this only going to be able to work with the Atom and 945 chipset? I have the HP 2133 and have been thinking about getting a 5101 and installing the broadcom crystal hd chip. If I can use this card with my 2133 though that would save me a lot of money.
