The upcoming EMTEC gdium EM-PC is a low cost subnotebook designed for students. EMTEC has operations in 24 countries, but the best product description I could find was on the EMTEC Australia web site, which states that the gdium EM-PC will be available in Australia in July.

Here are some of the machine’s specs:

  • Flash based storage (no hard drive)
  • Features a “removeable GKey, which houses the security/authentication”
  • Linux Operating Sytem
  • Webcam
  • 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display (although Blogeee reports there may also be a 10 inch model)
  • Weight: 1.1kg
  • Connectivity: 802.11b/g
  • Price: $449 Australian, or about $430 US
The GKey system is probably the most unusual aspect of this laptop. The operating system actually runs on a USB flash drive. This allows you to carry you files, settings, and the entire OS in your pocket. You can then plug in the GKey to any supported laptop. This ensures that you can quickly and easily switch from laptop to laptop in a classroom setting, while also making sure that nobody else can access your files (at least not without access to your key).

  1. Hi there for your record, the GDIUM will come in the first place with a 10″ screen (1024X600). The 8,9″ will come later.
