AMD’s new Temash, Kabini and Richland chips may be designed for laptops and tablets. But you can also use them in low-power desktop-style systems, and ECS has just introduced a Kabini-powered motherboard that you can use to build a small form-factor desktop.

The ECS KBN-I/2100 is a mini-ITX board with an AMD E1-2100 Kabini processor with AMD Radeon HD 8210 graphics.

The 1 GHz dual-core processor has a TDP of 9 watts, which means it doesn’t use much more power than an Intel Atom chip from a few years ago. But it should offer significantly better performance, especially when it comes to graphics. Not only does the Kabini chip support 1080p HD video playback, but it also supports DirectX 11.

The board also features 2 memory sockets and supports up to 32GB of RAM, 2 SATA III connectors, a PCI Express slot, two mini PCI Express slots, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 6 USB 2.0 ports, VGA, HDMI, and DVI ports. There’s also an Ethernet jack and even a PS/2 connector, in case you still need one of those (I suppose it could come in handy for point-of-sales systems).

  1. The temash and kabini are supposed to be as cheap as ARM counterparts, so how’s the price on this thing then ? is it more than $60 ?

    1. Support for the GCN-era GPUs with the open source driver is still not that great. The binary driver is okay though.
