Taiwan-based manufacturer ECS is showing off a reference design for one of the first Android tablets to feature an Intel Atom Bay Trail processor. Intel plans to roll out a series of new low-power chips designed for inexpensive Android tablets this year, and the ECS TA80TA1 is one of the first tablets based on the new design.

While it’s just a reference device, ECS showed off a fully functional demo unit at Mobile World Congress recently.

ECS TA80TA1

The tablet features a 1.83 GHz Intel Atom Z3735E quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an 8 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display. Right now it runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be updated to run a newer version of Google’s software.

Hopefully it’s also possible the finished model could ship with 2GB of RAM or more, but I suspect the relatively low screen resolution and amount of memory are designed to keep the price low.

The tablet features front and rear cameras, a micro USB port, micro HDMI port, and microSD card slot.

ECS doesn’t typically sell devices directly to consumers. Instead the company is an OEM that manufactures devices for other companies, so by the time a tablet based on this design hits the street it’ll probably have a different brand name on it.
