E Ink makes the digital paper used in most eReaders like the Amazon Kindle and B&N Nook Glowlight. But the company has also been branching out into areas like digital signage and even digital luggage tags in recent years.
This week the company is showing off several new technologies at the SID Display Week in San Francisco… and they’re all about digital signage.
So while it’s nice to know that the company’s latest color E Ink display can show more colors than earlier models, it’d be even nicer if that meant we’d see low-power, sunlight readable color eReaders anytime soon.
The improvement allows for up to 32,000 different colors, which 8 times more than E Ink was able to achieve with its previous E Ink displays.
Eventually we might see this technology in portable devices like eReaders. But E Ink is initially targeting the digital signage space.
The company is showing off new 20 inch, 1600 x 2500 pixel displays featuring its new color technology, which E Ink called Advanced Color ePaper (or ACeP).
E Ink is also showing off a new 32 inch flexible and light-weight Mobius E Ink display. This screen is also aimed at digital signage, and E Ink says it could be used in buses, trains, or other areas where public information systems or advertising could be placed overhead.
The 32 inch Mobius display has a resolution of 2650 x 1440 pixels and weighs less than 6 ounces.
