Shortly after Research in Motion released BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 for the company’s 7 inch tablet, folks noticed that it couldn’t be jailbroken using the existing versions of the Dingleberry jailbreak tool.

The developers behind the jailbreak had promised that Dingleberry 4.0 would be along soon to address the issue… but that was in February. Now the official changelog for Dinglberry says version 4.0 is canceled.

That’s not necessarily the end of the story. Developer Chris Wade says he’s still interested in releasing an updated version — but he’s been too busy to work on the project lately.

In the meantime, the source code for Dingleberry 3.3.3 is available for download if any would-be jailbreakers want to try to pick up where Wade and company left off.

Jailbreaking a device involves exploiting a security flaw in order to gain access to files and settings that are normally protected. This lets you run code that isn’t officially supported and change the way a phone or tablet behaves.

For instance, earlier versions of Dingleberry made it possible to install the Android Market on the BlackBerry PlayBook so you could run thousands of Android apps on the tablet rather than just those apps which developers have converted to BlackBerry PlayBook apps and submitted to the BlackBerry App World.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see anyone replace the BlackBerry tablet operating system with Android or another OS because the PlayBook has a secure bootloader. That means that while it may be possible to manipulate the official operating system files and settings, it’s much more difficult to boot an unsupported operating system.
