Dell’s new 7 and 8 inch tablets are now available in the US, with prices starting at $150.

For that price you can pick up an Android tablet with an Intel Atom Clover Trail+ processor. The Dell Venue 7 and Venue 8 are both available from Dell.com for $150 and $180, respectively.

Or for around $300 and up, you can get a Dell Venue 8 Pro with an Intel Atom Bay Trail processor and Windows 8.1 software. Amazon is taking orders for $296 and up, with an estimated ship date of November 1st.

Dell Venue 8 Pro

Dell’s Android tablets are budget models with decent, but not spectacular specs including Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS displays, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and 2GB of RAM. The tablets have at least 16GB of storage, plus microSD card slots for extra storage.

The Dell Venue 7 has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2560 Clover Trail+ processor, while the 8 inch model has a faster 2 GHz Atom Z2580 chip.

The Venue 8 Pro also has an 8 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, but this model has a faster Intel Atom Z3740D quad-core processor with Intel HD graphics, 64GB of storage, support for a digital pen, and Windows 8.1 software.

That means that in addition to mobile apps, you can run full desktop applications on the tablet, and it comes with Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student preloaded.

  2. #DELL #DellVenue If you order a Dell pro 8 don’t believe their website, not gonna ship tomorrow. Ordered min 10/18 got delayed to NOV8 email. Not even sure if this things are ready the ship date has changed so much.

    1. No, these models are only intended to run Android… You’d have to wait for models based on the newer Bay Trail/Merrifield platforms.

      You’d also need a distro with a 64bit boot loader that supports UEFI and based on Kernel 3.11 and later.

      1. The Dell Venue Pro 8 uses the Intel Atom Bay Trail Z3740.

        Is it possible that eventually it would be able to triple-boot
        Windows8/Ubuntu/Android once the internet gets it figured out?

        Of course it should be able to dual-boot Windows8/Ubuntu,
        but it would be fun to have a little Android too.

        1. Yes, dual boot Android and Windows 8 are in the works for later. Android is just taking longer to re-optimize for Bay Trail than Windows 8 did and there are firmware makers that are already advertising the ability to dual boot within 4 seconds without needing to actually reboot each time.

          The rest of Linux support should come eventually and then you can do as many boot options as you may want but you may want to avoid some of the first models out.

          The Asus T100 for example seems to have come with the older 32bit UEFI instead of 64bit and that makes running 3rd party OS a little harder but they could update it later to 64bit but better to make sure it has it when you get the device…

  4. The Dell tablets may be available to purchase, however the ship date isn’t until November 20th.
    I am looking forward to the release of their 10″ tablet in November. I wonder when that will ship–December?

  5. I hope there is Bay Trial support for Ubuntu soon. That would make transforming one of these cheaper android tablets into a true ubuntu powered computer possible…Or am I incorrect?

    1. Intel has already added Bay Trail to their Open Source Linux driver support for the GMA… While Linux Kernel 3.11 onward have added support for Bay Trail Audio, etc.

      So, basically, you’d need the latest distro with a 64bit boot loader that will work with the UEFI firmware… Many developers are just waiting on getting their hands on some Bay Trail devices to optimize their distro and then you should start seeing plenty of Bay Trail ready distros being released soon.

      Mobile devices just lack advance FW features like support for legacy BIOS mode. So everything has to work with UEFI and that is what’s tricky so far with support to date but once you get past the boot loader then everything else should work pretty well…

    1. Bay Trail Android tablets should be coming out relatively soon… there was just suppose to be about a 2 month delay after because they needed to optimize Android for Bay Trail… Everything they did for Clover Trail doesn’t carry over to Bay Trail…

      Z36xx dual core models will also likely be released for Android only products that should be much cheaper than the present quad core models being released.

      Since, the quad core Bay Trail’s are already cheaper than the dual core Clover Trail it likely means the dual core Bay Trail’s may be even cheaper than the Clover Trail+ models mentioned in this article… Though, it won’t be until Merrifield comes out early next year before they will offer 4G/LTE support.

  7. So you think that with the atom processor, you could potentially buy the venue 7 with android and install windows instead?

      1. On the other hand Android on a Venue Pro seems quite likely. Intel’s test builds are designed to load on x86 EFI machines. These product introductions show that Dell still “doesn’t get” Android and is firmly clinging to the sinking raft of Windows.

        1. Windows Tablets are far better than Android Tablets, its just a better tablet OS. Regardless of your preference, there are much better tablets for your $ if your just gonna put Android on the thing.
