new-dell-mini

Evidence is mounting that Dell plans to release its latest netbook this month. The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is expected to have a 10.1 inch display, an Intel Atom Z530 Silverthorne processor, and a choice of display resolutions (1024 x 576 pixels or 1366 x 768 pixels) designed for watching widescreen movies comfortably.

On Monday, blogger Paul Synnott posted an exchange he had with a Dell rep in the UK, indicating that the computer would be available on February 27th. I was a bit skeptical, since the folks working the customer support chatrooms often don’t have access to this kind of information. But then today reader Dawid Rarowski forwarded me an email newsletter from Dell, which included a section saying “Get ready for the new mini.”

While the Inspiron Mini 10 isn’t named, the image does show a series of netbooks with colorful lids and promises an “edge to edge” display and a new multi-touch trackpad, both of which are things we expect to see in the new mini-laptops. And I’m guessing that Dell wouldn’t go around promoting these machines if the company didn’t plan to release them soon. No word on pricing yet, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see these puppies hit Dell’s online stores in the US and UK before the end of February.

thanks Dawid!

  1. The Dell Mini 10 spec chart Brad posted earlier (linked in above article) says it will have 1-2 GB RAM. I understood that the Poulsbo chipset which is used with Silverthorn supports only 1 GB. Does this mean that another chipset will be used?

It’s also interesting that the OS’s are listed as XP and Linux, with Vista conspicuously absent (but Win 7 waiting in the wings).

Dell says the Mini 10 6-cell battery will last 6-8 hours, which will be quite a switch from the Mini 9 and Mini 12; but, if this is nearly true, it should compete well with the HP 2140 and Eee 1000HE in this regard.

  2. @Pixel Qi fan: We will have to wait for touch screens a bit longer, I guess.

@DougC3: Some benchmarks and personal preference should clear up the confusion.

Well, a 10 inch model lacks in Dell netbook series, I’m sure it will do great, especially with the higher resolution.

  3. So far it looks like the HP 2140 may be lagging behind on processor upgrading. They seem to be keeping the N270 while Asus charges forward with the N280 (without the new chipset) and Dell, with the Silverthorn Z520 1.3GHz and Z530 1.6 GHz.

The N280 has a 667 GHz front side bus speed while the N270, Z520, and Z530 only perk along at 533 GHz. The newer three seem to be aimed at improving media performance, but how do they compare with each other ?

This is all getting rather confusing. I even saw a couple of sites reporting that the Asus 1000HE would have a Z280 processor, which doesn’t even exist. 🙂

I wish a processor expert (not to say wonk, dweeb, etc) would weigh in and explain the pros and cons of these things.

  4. Will it have touch screen? Better if it did!

So, this Dell Mini 10 will have the HD screen with 1366 x768 available. Hmmm, So then, the HP 2140 with the same HD screen with 1366×768 should be available at the same time…? Any news about the HD version of the 2140?

Of course, neither has 12-15 hours of use per charge (still waiting for that).
