The folks at Engadget spent some time with the newly announced Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook, and shot a bunch of photos of the netbook sitting next to its siblings, the Dell Inspiron Minis 9 and 12.

The Mini 10 doesn’t look much bigger than the Mini 9, which isn’t surprising, since the display is just an inch larger. But the keyboard is also a bit roomier and the new netbook features a fancy new multi-touch touchpad which Engadget’s Nilay Patel says is pretty close to the touchpad on the latest MacBook models.

Meanwhile, Laptop Magazine’s Joanna Stern has a video overview of the new netbook, and she notes that the new keyboard is not only larger than the Dell Mini Inspironn 9 keyboard, but also features a full set of Fn keys. She says the keyboard is even larger than the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 keyboard, since the keys go from one edge of the machine to the other with almost no room on the sides.

There’s still no word on how much the Mini 10 will cost or when it will hit the streets, but I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything.

  1. This thing will be so light that when you press something on the touch screen it will lift up or fall over, unless its a “netvertible” then theres not alot of practicality in a touchscreen. Awesome…

  2. Wow, this is an exciting time for netbooks. I was thinking the new HP Mini 2140 had a dazzling array of new features, but now I’m leaning toward the Dell Mini 10. Both will be available in high resolution, both appear to have excellent keyboards (though I’m not really used to the newer flat-ish keys yet), both will have 6-cell batteries available.

I like the HDMI-out connector on the Mini 10… I could stream my favorite live African waterhole webcam on my HDTV all night (and be waked up by strange animals in my bedroom 🙂 I also like the Dell’s black keyboard, touchpad, black case availability, and “the newest Intel Atom platform with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor.”

The great aluminum case and tough keys of the HP Mini 2140 are appealing, but maybe a little overkill for a netbook. The black plastic of the Dell is OK with me. I like the availability of the fast hard drive and big SSD for the HP, and we’ll have to wait and see how the Dell compares in this area. I’m also a fan of the ExpressCard, because of its versatility, and will miss that HP feature (the slot, that is) if I get the Dell. The HP has the best battery duration yet, and I sort of doubt that the Dell can match it.

I would like to continue this comparison on the Liliputing forums in the General Discussion area (here) if anyone is interested, so we can have a longer discussion about this as more news comes out about these two devices.
