After a false start a few weeks ago, Dell has finally rolled out a GPS option for the Inspiron Mini 10 netbook in the US. The upgrade doesn’t come cheap. You’ll have to pay $70 for the integrated GPS unit and software, plus another $35 to get the higher resolution 1366 x 768 pixel display option. The GPS option isn’t available for the standard 1024 x 600 pixel display.

On the one hand, $105 is kind of a lot of money for an add-on for a $349 netbook. On the other hand, good luck finding a standalone GPS unit with a high resolution display for that price.

In order to choose the GPS upgrade, visit Dell’s Mini 10 order page, and when you customize your netbook, make sure to check the GPS option in the Mobile Connectivity section.

GPS is only available on Mini 10 netbooks running Windows XP. You can’t get GPS on an Ubuntu version of the netbook or on the Inspiron Mini 10v.

    All good things come to an end when the corporations discover them. This is no longer an option on their site.

  4. … one more thing. If I don’t click TV Tuner or the GPS, will this leave a free PCI-e slot in the netbook?

    I saw that they’re planning a Broadcom Crystal PCI-e card that I’d like for an extra oomph on video playback. I know it’s iffy waiting for netbook add-ons, especially ones I first saw for HPs, but I want that option if it opens up.

  5. I am about to buy a Garmin so I am wondering how this would work in the car as an alternative

    Would it fit on the dash?

    Would it be just as fast and accurate as a dedicated GPS unit?

  6. I just checked and I think they got rid of the standard definition option on the Mini 10. I only see a $399 option including the GPS and the HD screen. Not bad … but a better deal is unclicking the GPS for a HD netbook with 6-cell battery and good keyboard for only $329. That’s the cheapest HD netbook I know of. But I think the $50 processor upgrade (Z520->Z530) would be a must for me.

  7. While I think GPS is awesome and I want this, I’m not sure why I’d need it. Not like I’ll be hiking with a mini. Car…Ya I guess.
