Shopping for an ultrabook can be a bit confusing these days, with models on the market featuring 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Intel Core processors, a range of screen sizes and resolutions, and other variations. The only thing they all really have in common is that they’re less than an inch thick and powered by an Intel chip.

Personally I’m partial to models that are ultra-thin and which feature screen resolutions higher than 1366 x 768 pixels, which is why I like the Asus Zenbook and Samsung Series 9 lines. Not every ultrabook in those families has a high-res display, but many do.

Today Beach Camera is offering great deals on the Asus Zenbook UX31A with a 1600 x 900 pixel screen and an Ivy Bridge processor. You can pick up a refurbished model for just $610, or a brand new version for $110 more.

  1. Gosh that refurb UX31 is tempting. The 4GB is non-upgradeable though 🙁 For $539 there is a UX32A on Amazon, where you could replace a 2GB sodimm with an 8gb for 10gb total. Of course the UX32A’s I’m looking at are sandy bridge and not ivy bridge, don’t come with 16900×900 resolution, and don’t come standard with the SSD.

(Only thing I hate about Asus is how many ways they chop up the offerings!)

However, for $70 more, I’m thinking it would be silly not to grab the Ivy Bridge. Glad I caught this post Brad, I was about a minute away from submitting the order for the UX32A.

Somewhat concerned to only have 4GB memory, but thankful to see Haswell killing the prices of Sandy and Ivy bridge ultrabooks. I’m a big fan of staying a generation (or two) behind. I think I’ll hang up the UL20FT!
