You can often save money on a wide range of products by picking up a refurbished model… but the tradeoff is that you’re getting a used device that’s supposed to have been restored to working condition so it can be resold. Some manufacturers and/or retailers stand by their refurbishing jobs more than others.
So I tend to feel best about recommending deals on refurbished laptops and tablet when the product comes with a 1-year warranty, which is what you get when you buy most new laptops or tablets (unless you pay extra for an extended warranty or buy a business-class machine, which often include longer warranties).
Case in point: today there are two pretty attractive deals on refurbished HP computers. Adorama is selling an Envy 13 with a 4K display, an 8th-gen Intel processor, and discrete graphics for $800, which is a pretty great price. But you only get a 90-day warranty, so if it looks like anything’s wrong with the computer, you’d better figure it out within the first three months.
Meanwhile, Amazon is selling an HP Spectre Pro convertible with a 2560 x 1440 pixel display and a 6th-gen Intel Core processor for $600. It’s not going to be quite as speedy as the Envy, but it’s cheaper and it comes with a 1-year warranty, which is a nice bonus.
