Don’t ask me why a holiday to remember American military personnel who died in the line of duty is an excuse to score discounts on consumer goods… but that’s the world we live in.

I’ll take Capitalism for $1000, Alex.
Not just capitalism but laissez-faire low regulation capitalism — not truly “free market” because there is no such thing as a totally “free” market.
“but that’s the world we live in”
Wrong. It is not the world we live in, but the country+society which big corporations have built, this web site aids and promotes through its constant appeals to “buy, buy, buy”. and the citizens have, for the most part, accepted because of the bread and circuses and cheap (low quality) trinkets which are on offer.
Must dash, there’s a time limited offer blue light special on fidgets I have to go and stock up on to keep my mind occupied ^H^H^H^ diverted.
You can’t keep the millions of people on this Earth employed without convincing them to continuously buy new garbage to replace their old garbage….. so yeah, it is the world we live in.
Don’t get me wrong, Frank, I love every bit of it. Even the scare quotes around free market. I truly enjoyed all the economics classes I took in college. Learned a lot.
