Gigabyte sells a line of tiny desktop computers under the BRIX brand. Some models have Intel chips while other have AMD. Most ship as barebones systems which means that while there’s a processor included you’ll need to supply your own storage, hard drive and operating system.

And some models have unusual features: like a built-in projector.

The Gigabyte BRIX GB-BXPi3-4010 is a small barebones desktop with a Core i3 Haswell processor and a built-in 75 lumen projector. The system has a list price of $350, but right now Newegg is selling it for $75 off — and that price includes 4GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD (but no operating system).

  1. That’s surprisingly good resolution for the price (including a full computer).
    But knowing that 500–1000 lumen pico projectors exist nowdays (though much more expensive),
    75 lumens, while not exactly useless, is just not tempting…

  2. I got a new Acer Aspire 11.6 about a month ago and it’s very good considering its low price, it works very well, I recommend it.

  4. I brought one of these, and am currently thinking of selling it.
    It is great if what you want is:
    A small computer you can bring to a friends house or set up in a dorm for watching a movie or playing some basic video games (that i3 can handle more than you might think gaming wise)

    It is not good for:
    replacing a home theater system. The res is too low, and the projector does not have any of the things you might take for granted like keystone or orientation adjustments. It has a tripod mount on the bottom (rad) but the tripod it comes with is small and will often get pulled over by the weight of the power brick.(sad)

    I have taken to using it primarily as a plex server, it works great for that, but the projector never gets used.

    also the WiFi card in there really sucks. If you want to use the WiFi reliably and or the bluetooth, you should replace it.

    1. Yeah, honestly my sense was that at this price it’s not a bad deal for a mini PC with those specs. The projector is just a bonus feature (although you’ll probably be better off investing in a higher-quality projector that you can plug in if you plan to use it regularly).

  5. The Brix deal also includes 4gb memory and a 64mSATA drive. Together those are listed ~$74.

    Seems like a good deal to me, considering what you might pay for an LED projector and a NUC. Wish I could actually justify the purchase, but I don’t really need it at the moment.

    Anyone else know about these? Maybe they aren’t as good a deal as I think they are?
