With a list price of $150, the Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet isn’t exactly expensive. But Amazon is now offering a more-is-less kind of package for folks looking for a tablet that they can use to read eBooks… among other things.

For $250 you can now get a Fire HD 8 Readers Edition tablet. In addition to an 8 inch tablet with a 1280 x 800 pixel display and a quad-core processor, you get a 1-year subscription to the Kindle Unlimited eBook subscription service and a leather case for the tablet.

Amazon says you’d have to spend $350 if you bought those things separately… although that’s only true if you were planning so spend $80 on a case. Still, this bundle can certainly save you some money… although the cheapest option right now is to just buy the tablet on its own. Amazon is currently selling it for just $130 as part of a Fire tablet sale.

You could always check out eBooks for free from your public library if you don’t want to spend money on a Kindle Unlimited subscription.

  1. Yay for the public libraries mention.

If you haven’t checked your library’s collection of ebooks in a while, you should look again. Most libraries are increasing the amount of their budget spent on ebooks and downloadable audiobooks, and they’re buying from more than one platform.

  2. It’s still a backlit screen with <200dpi pixel density. Maybe it's just me, but that's tough to read novels on.

    1. Shame on you Amazon! I really respect this company but to pull this?
