The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 may have a bigger, higher-resolution display, more powerful processor options, and a better pen than the Surface Pro 3. But it also has a starting price of $899, which is $100 more than the starting price of the model that launched last year.
Of course, that was then, this is now… and you can get a Surface Pro 3 for even cheaper. Right now the Microsoft Store is selling models for $699 and up, and Best Buy has a model for as little as $650.
If you don’t need all the new bells and whistles, that makes the Surface Pro 3 a lot cheaper than the new Surface Pro 4.

$899 is a actually relatively cheap considering it’s one of the few MSRP laptops under a thousand dollars with a high res display. Far too many manufacturers have been restocking their inventory with faster processors but the same resolution monitors. Here’s hoping 1880 vertical resolution becomes the new normal rather than 900p. Update: I thought it was 1880p but I guess it’s only 1440p. I bought a PC monitor in 2013 with qhd, so the “state of the art” screen is a little disappointing, but 4:3 monitors do look a little nice. At this pace entry level monitors will have 2160p in the year 2020.
The Yoga 3 Pro is one that approaches reasonable deals but I have yet to see their newer models and they aren’t advertised as much, possibly as they cut into their other lines. It still uses Core M but I’d expect a 14nm variant eventually. Update 2: there is, the Yoga 900. Hopefully they aren’t discontinued and left unsupported.
I think getting a closeout Surface Pro 3 along with the new (SP4) keyboard offers a strong value proposition given the biggest area of improvement in the SP4 is actually the new keyboard- which is backwards comparable with the SP3.
How does the performance (CPU and GPU) of the SP3 i5 compare to the SP4 i3?
Boy, I am having no regrets about purchasing my 2k/8GB/128GB T300 Chi for $550
Seriously, I love that thing. I almost cried the first time I scratched the finish, but otherwise DAMN I love it.
Have you used an active pen with it? I had really bad luck with the Asus pen and use an HP instead.
I did have a few Dell Active Pens laying around from my DV8P. They work really well 🙂
Now, I have a question for you:
Do you have any graphics glitches running windows 10? Display driver crashes, green artifacting on youtube videos?
Not after I adjusted the scaling down to 100%. Initially things were a little off, but it was scaled at 125% or something. I have a great glasses prescription, so native 2k resolution and 100% scaling are perfect for me.
Have you tried driver updates and/or rollbacks?
“Have you tried driver updates and/or rollbacks?”
Only about a billion. I’ll try the scaling and see if that helps/
