Lenovo’s ThinkPad Carbon X1 notebooks offer premium specs in a compact case. Earlier this month Lenovo introduced a new 3rd-gen model powered by Intel Broadwell processors.

That means it’s a great time for bargain hunters to pick up last year’s 2nd-gen models of this 2.8 pound notebook.

Right now Lenovo is selling a model with a 14 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel display, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storge, and a Core i5-4300U processor for just $809.

      1. The touch area above the keys include a screen and doubles as the F1-12 area. Also please note what happened to the Backspace button, the CapsLock, the area between the right Ctrl and Alt, the lack of physical buttons for the UltraNav, and now please imagine all this with a localized (non-US) layout…

  1. This is the screwed up 2nd gen model X1 Carbon with the strip.

The backspace and delete keys are also totally messed up on the
keyboard layout. I can barely use this laptop.

Worst thinkpad I have ever owned – and I have had a lot of thinkpads.

  2. After the Dell XPS 13 came out at $799, everything else looks overpriced.

  3. Still nowhere near a good enough deal to make this attractive to an old school ThinkPad owner. Last year’s Carbon X1 was a monstrous aberration with non-physical buttons for the Trackpoint, a touch-sensitive strip where the Function buttons row is supposed to be, and this weird pivoting Home/End thing in place of the Caps Lock. It was such a disaster this year’s new ThinkPads all went back to physical Trackpoint buttons and the X1 ditched all the new layout changes. Lenovo should’ve known the keyboard and trackpoint are major selling points for returning customers and they decided to screw that up.
I”m actually thinking about picking up a refurbished T420 when my T60 finally goes under.

    1. If there were a Kickstater campaign to produce a T60p motherboard compatible with the old screen and connectors so you can swap it yourself, with Haswell, 2 mSata connectors for SSD, SATA Ultrabay and a proper GPU, I’d be throwing money at my screen right now… And I bet a lot of other people would too.
