CTL is launching a new Chromebook featuring an 11.6 inch display, an Intel Celeron N2930 quad-core Bay Trail processor, and a fanless design.

The $279 Chromebook is aimed at the education market, but it’s available for anyone to purchase from the CTL Website.

The CTL Education Chromebook also features a rugged design which makes it a bit more classroom-friendly than some laptops.

Features include a 1366 x 768 pixel anti-glare display, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of solid state storage, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 1MP camera that can rotate so it’s facing the student or the teacher. There’s also an optional snap-on lens for 30x magnification which lets you use the Chromebook like a digital mangifying glass.

The notebook has an HDMI port, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB 2.0 port, and an SD card reader. It weighs 3.04 pounds and CTL says the Education Chromebook should get up to 8 hours of battery life thanks to a 36Whr, 3200mAh battery.

CTL’s Chromebook is one of the first models based on Intel’s Education Chromebook reference design. M&A Technology is also launching an Education Chromebook based on Intel’s design.

Other kid-friendly features including a carrying handle, a spill-proof keyboard, scratch-resistant keys, and the ability to withstand falls of a few feet.

  1. I’d be rather interested in a fanless subnotebook but ChromeOS really isnt what I am after – so two questions, can we replace the integrated storage (need at minimum a 256GB SSD) and can we make it boot any x86 compatible OS?

    1. Yes, that is possible, but you would be stuck with Linux, not Windows (not like that’s a bad thing, there are some great choices out there.) 🙂 Also, you would need to find out what type of SSD it uses, but it is likely the MyDigitalSSD one used in other Chromebooks.

    1. I went back and forth with CTL on this because they had some product materials that said 8 while others said 9.5.

Apparently Intel says 9.5, but Google says 8. Each company has its own testing methodoly. I went with 8 to be on the conservative side.

  2. Good specs but it’s the display I’d like to see improved. My Acer C720 runs lubuntu like a dream but I’m holding out for an intel CB with an IPS display until I upgrade.
