CLEAR offers 4G WiMAX internet service in a growing number of locations around the country. While most people probably think of WiMAX as a mobile broadband service akin to 3G, CLEAR also offers in-home service. Just pick up a CLEAR home modem, place it near a window where it can pick up a good signal, and you’ve got in-home internet service with speeds similar to what you’d expect from DSL.

When I tested out CLEAR’s home service last year, the company only offered a modem, not a router. That meant if you wanted to get one computer online you were all set. But if you wanted to set up a home network you needed an Ethernet or WiFI router.

Now it looks like CLEAR is getting ready to bring an updated version of its home modem to market, complete with an integrated WiFi router. Wireless Goodness spotted an FCC listing for a new CLEAR 4G modem with an integrated 802.11b/g/n WiFi router.

There’s also a phone jack in the modem, which could be an indication that CLEAR plans to offer VoIP service as well.

No word on when the new modem will be available or how much it will cost.

Incidentally, I canceled my home service because the reception just wasn’t stable enough — even though I live just a few blocks from the nearest access point. I’ve had a lot of success with CLEAR’s USB stick for mobile broadband on the go, but the service just wasn’t strong enough in the house to warrant switching from my existing ISP.
