century-netbook-standPart of what makes netbooks so special is that they’re extremely thin and light. And in order to stay that way, most netbook makers omit some features like an enormous display and an optical disc drive. But if you keep looking at your mini-laptop wondering why it doesn’t have a DVD burner, Century has got an accessory for you.

The Century Netbook Stand is available in Japan. This gizmo serves a few functions. First, it hangs out under our laptop and helps protect your precious lap from any excess heat. But it also has a DVD Super Multi drive for burning and reading discs, as well as room for a 2.5″ disk drive that you can use for extra storage space for your netbook. It also acts as a USB hub. The DVD drive is included, but you’ll have to add your own hard drive or SSD.

The netbook stand has a flip up fan on its side that helps keep things cool. The Century Netbook Stand runs about $100 in Japan and comes in black or white. The folks at Akihabara News have posted some hands-on photos.

  1. Pretty neat – and for less than the cost of a stand/hub with fan, an ext. DVD burner, and a 2.5″ HD case bought separately. Despite that, it as an accessory is still kind of expensive in the scale of the cost of a netbook, but if one had a few it would be very worthwhile. People seem to buy i-accessories for more than the price of their device, so I think this product would definitely catch on. Now bring it to the rest of the world!

  2. My Girlfriend says she’d only get a netbook if it had DVD. This would fit the bill nicely, I hope it comes to the US.
