Over the last few months I’ve seen a lot of low cost tablets and eReaders from Pandigital show up on eBay and at other stores with ridiculously low prices. We’re talking about new and refurbished eReaders that sell for under $50, and tablets that go for less than $70.

Now I know why the market is flooded with these budget tablets at even lower-than-usual prices. Pandigital declared bankrupty this summer, and The Digital Reader reports the company’s inventory is being sold off by liquidators trying to get a fraction of the original value from Pandigital’s remaining assets.

Pandigital tablet

Pandigital has been offering Android tablets and eReaders for a few years. Early models suffered from lousy screens and poor battery life, but they tended to be priced much lower than the competition, which might have made them valuable to some customers.

With Asus, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other companies now offering high quality tablets for under $200 with fast processors, excellent displays, and other premium features, I’m not surprised that Pandigital had a hard time competing.

  1. Pandigital’s Supernova is a very good reader by far. My IPad2 went straight back to the shop because it was much bulkier and heavier than Pandigital Supernova to read a book on. Sorry to hear that about Pandigital. 🙁

I hope those guys will come back under some other name. After all someone smart enough to have created a Supernova is still around.

Honestly, I pretty much stopped using Googleapps Market ever since I had learned that they wouldn’t license Pandigital readers to have access to Google Play. I think it was VERY disrespectful of Google to a great amount of people (it is also questionable if it was legal/legitimate to do so at all) .

  3. I wondered why Coby and even Velocity Micro introduced new models but not Pandigital. So, is Velocity or Coby next to go under? Or maybe Archos, who likes to release a lot of half-baked crap instead of just one *excellent* tablet.

    1. This is quite typical of capitalistic system to “buy out” a promising competitor. 🙂

  4. They will not be missed by anyone except Radio Shack, who actually tries (or tried) to price these pieces of crap like actual tablets that people would enjoy using on a daily basis.
