Want to install a custom ROM on your Motorola smartphone? Up until now that’s been easier said than done on some of the latest Motorola devices, thanks to bootloaders which were locked down tight.
But security researcher Dan Rosenberg has figured out how to crack open those bootloaders, and he’s released the tools to do it.
The Motopocalypse tool is available as a free download from VulnFactory, and you can use it to unlock the following devices:
- Motorola Droid RAZR HD
- Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD
- Motorola Droid RAZR M
- Motorola Atrix HD
Note that you’ll need a phone that’s already been rooted, and you’ll have to connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable to proceed.
There’s also currently no way to relock your phone’s bootloader. That means you’re basically going to void your warranty and you may leave your device more vulnerable.
On the other hand, if you’re thinking of unlocking your bootloader, there’s no time like the present. There’s a chance that Motorola could patch the vulnerabilities exploited by this tool in a future software update.
