The BlackBerry PlayBook may not have received glowing reviews thanks to an awkward power button and lackluster software, but the tablet is still a pretty solid piece of hardware with excellent support for multitasking and a compact form factor. And some of its biggest failings could be addressed by future software updates. So if you’re one of the BlackBerry faithful who’s been waiting with bated breath for this tablet to go on sale… the day has arrived. The BlackBerry PlayBook is now available in the US and Canada.

The tablet has a 1 GHz dual core TI OMAP4 processor, a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, and 16GB to 64GB of RAM. There’s no 3G option at this point, but you do get WiFi and the ability to pair the tablet with a phone for internet access on the go.

The 16GB model will set you back $500, or about the price of a 16GB Apple iPad 2. The 32GB model runs $600, while the 64GB model costs $700. Retailers including Best Buy, Office Depot, OfficeMax and Staples are taking orders for the tablet. You can also buy one directly from Research in Motion.

Staples actually seems to have the best prices… with the PlayBook selling for about 99 cents off at $499 to $699.

  1. That’s “bated” breath, as in “abated.” “Baited” breath is when a cat eats a piece of cheese and then waits outside the mousehole.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  2. I’m rather impressed with what RIM has come up with. I really want to see how well the browser on this does compared to other tablet browsers because the others aren’t near desktop quality.
