Microsoft introduced a new secure login system called Windows Hello with Windows 10. It allows you to login on some devices using a fingerprint reader, facial recognition, or iris scanner. But for up until recently the only way to use Windows Hello was to buy a PC or smartphone that already had the required hardware.
Now you can add Windows Hello compatibility to just about any Windows 10 PC buy purchasing a $40 accessory.
BIO-key has launched three new Windows Hello-compatible fingerprint sensors and they’re all available from the Microsoft Store.
The BIO-key SideSwipe mini fingerprint reader is a tiny accessory that brings a fingerprint scanner to any USB port on a laptop or tablet.
The SideTouch fingerprint reader is a bit larger, with more surface space, but it also slots into any USB port to add a fingerprint scanner to the side of your device.
Bio-key’s EcoID fingerprint reader, meanwhile, is a less compact solution that uses a USB cable to connect to your computer. It’s probably a better solution for desktop users, since it an rest on your desk and connect to a PC no the floor, behind your monitor, or in another location that might be harder to reach with your fingertips.
All three fingerprint readers are priced at $40, and all three are compatible with Windows Hello… although you can also use them with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers.
