Best Buy may already have a tablet computer for sale, called the Apple iPad. But Forbes is reporting that Best Buy plans to seriously up that number in time for the holiday season. The company isn’t saying exactly which models it will carry, but a Best Buy exec has indicated the retailer could stock a dozen or more models… or at least more than one.
That makes sense, since Best Buy already has a pretty wide array of notebook and desktop computers running Windows and OS X. Tablets expected to hit the streets in the coming months will likely run Windows 7, Google Android, BlackBerry/QNX, and eventually Palm WebOS and Google Chrome as well as MeeGo Linux and other Linux-based operating systems. Best Buy isn’t saying which operating systems it will stock, but if the goal is to provide consumers with choices, 1-2 tablets won’t cut it. You’ll likely need to have at least half a dozen per store until you figure out which models sell best.
Best Buy will also likely offer at least one tablet under its own in-house RocketFish brand name. Best Buy CTO Robert Stephens showed off the first photos of the company’s RocketFish tablet a few weeks ago.
The market seems to be getting populated with so many brands that it could get confusing for customers actually.
